Delta Spirit: an Ode to Lyricism

Delta Spirit’s follow up to “Ode To Sunshine” called “History from below” is, in  my opinion one of the better albums of 2010.  I will be the first to admit I was a bit worried how they would follow up “Ode To Sunshine.”  That 1st full length LP was so strong, hits like “Trashcan,” “Strange Vine,” and the title track made me think it would be hard to replicate, duplicate or even try and imitate.  However, “History From Below” makes a sophomore effort sound more like a 4th year grad student.  Sure, we play the track “Bushwick Blues” on Lightning100, but that tune is just the tip of the iceberg(one that floats somewhere off the coast of San Diego).  The record jumps back and forth from electric well produced rock to beautiful, stripped down acoustic ballads.  I am a sucker for the later.  “Ransom Man” and “Scarecrow” are wonderful examples of this.  It seems as though “Scarecrow” was recorded outside during a BBQ, with birds chirping in the background, a voice offering food to someone, and even the sound of car tires pulling up though a gravel drive.  The lyric “this may sound redundant, cus you’ve chosen your own fate.  But there’s more to you than just a pretty face” gives me chills every time I hear it.  The track “Ballad of Vitaly” is tragically eloquent.  Needless to say, I think everyone should give this record a chance.  I however, haven’t yet given my car CD player a chance to play something else.  OH… And they are from Cali.  Got to pump the music coming out of the State that produced yours truly.
