Biography

A Music City native, Fred caught the radio bug early in life at the tender age of 14. He carried his new love forward into college radio, serving as both Program Director and Station Manager of Vanderbilt University's WRVU (1974-1979), and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Mathematics from Vanderbilt. Fred later enrolled in Tennessee State University’s Executive M.B.A. Marketing program. He is also a 2000 graduate of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s “FastTrac Planning” executive management program, a 2004 alumnus of Nashville’s professional Leadership Music program, and participated in Nashville Startup Weekend 2008. A radio industry veteran for over 35 years, Fred spent nine years at WKDA and WKDF/Nashville (1976-1985) in various on-air and operational capacities, rising to Program Director of Country WKDA in 1980. He was also part of the original "Rebel 100" air staff (Lightning 100's predecessor) in the late 80s. Later, Fred was in Corporate Operations at Jefferson-Pilot Communications in Charlotte, NC (1989-1990), and an on-air personality at KCFX/Kansas City (1990-1992). While in K.C., he co-founded a national advertising agency before returning to his Music City roots in 1992 as Production Manager for Lightning 100. In 1995, he became Director of Operations for the station’s parent group (Tuned In Broadcasting, Inc.) and was named General Manager for the group’s five Nashville-area properties (WRLT, WRLG, WYYB, WDBL-AM & FM) in 1998. In addition to his long on-air history in Nashville, Fred has hosted Lightning 100’s popular "Retro Lightning" program (heard every Saturday morning from 8am-12Noon) since 1993. Fred currently serves on Leadership Music’s Board of Directors, the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters’ Board of Directors, the March of Dimes’ AIR Awards Board of Governors. He is also a member of the Nashville Advertising Federation, the Country Music Association and the Americana Music Association.

RETRO LIGHTNING – 1981

(Show #967; aired on 05-12-2012)

In 1981, I was actually the Program Director of a COUNTRY station here in Nashville (WKDA).  Rock music was going through an identity crisis, and as a result, some of the “Urban Cowboy” crossovers were finding their way to the top of the Pop charts and on to Rock radio as well!  The clubs were also beginning to heat-up with long, rhythmic, unknown tunes that year.  Hello, MTV!  Enjoy today’s show! — Fred

RETRO LIGHTNING – 1970

(Show #966; aired on 05-05-2012)

.

1970 — More peace marches and war protests…and then there was Kent State.  What a senseless tragedy.  1970 also marked the birth of Progressive FM radio stations.  They began popping up across the U.S. as an alternative listening experience to Top 40 Hit radio.  Today, you’ll hear some of the great music found on those new FM stations back in 1970.  I hope you enjoy today’s show and please feel free to share today’s playlist with all of your friends! — Fred

RETRO LIGHTNING – 1978

(Show #965; aired on 04-28-2012)

In 1978, I was deeeeeeeep into college radio at Vanderbilt.  I was living and breathing it 24/7.  Thank goodness the Disco storm had subsided a bit and Progressive Rock was reclaiming its territory as THE “true art form”.  It was a good year overall musically-speaking.  Check out today’s playlist below for a good sampling of musical styles from 1978.  I hope you enjoy today’s show, thanks for listening, and feel free to share my playlist with all of your friends! — Fred

RETRO LIGHTNING – 1969

(Show #964; aired on 04-21-2012)

1969.  A year of turmoil, tragedy and war protests.  But there were some bright moments, too.  1) Man’s first steps on the moon, 2) Woodstock, and 3) the debut of “Sesame Street“!  And thank goodness there was some great Progressive music to accompany it all.  Here’s a taste of what was brewing musically in 1969.  I hope you enjoy today’s program…and let me hear your thoughts! — Fred

RETRO LIGHTNING – 1975

(Show #963; aired on 04-14-2012)

As most of you already know, 1975 was the year I graduated from high school right here in Nashville.  It was also my first year as a radio DJ at Vanderbilt’s WRVU.  Doubling as the station’s Music Director that year, I was introduced to a wide variety of music to select for airplay on the station.  Today’s show represents just a small fraction of all the great songs I had to choose from.  Hope you enjoy the memories!! — Fred
