Lt. Dan has been on the airwaves in Nashville, TN since 1997. Starting off part time on air working the midnight shift on weekends. Dan was the on air backup quarterback until 2001 when he was hired as the full time Production Director. Dan then went from hosting the Lightning 100 request lunch, to being on air from noon to 3pm, to finally taking over mid day duties. Now you can hear him weekdays from 10am-3pm on 100.1 FM & Lightning100.com Dan hosts many of the on air interviews, while also maintaining his Production Director status for Tuned In Broadcasting Inc. He helps create the weekly Music Business Radio program and hosts the public affairs show, Tuned In. He also has his own DJ and Production company, DJing weddings and parties and also freelancing for the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and the Tennessee Titans.

Kim Collins is a soulful singer, multi-instrumentalist and well respected songwriter who fronts the bands, “The Smoking Flowers” and “Kim’s Fable”. Kim was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone surgery to remove the tumors. As it stands today, her prognosis is good, but the medical bills and ongoing treatments astronomically expensive. Her friends and fellow musicians have joined together to donate their time and talents to help raise money for her during this battle.
Yesterday, J. Tillman, drummer for Fleet Foxes announced tonight would be his last show with the band. He joined them in 2008 and has released several solo albums over the years.
Some Rolling Stones fans have banded together and are demanding changes to the way the group tours. The Rolling Stones Liberation Front is threatening non-violent, disruptive action to get across their demands, which are:
1) WE WANT SMALLER VENUES: We believe the time has passed for gargantuan mega-arena spectaculars; hardly anything good comes from these soulless shows… The introduction of the considerably smaller B-stage set up in the middle of the venue at the end of 1994′s Voodoo Lounge tour was a perfect step toward this philosophy.
2) WE WANT LOWER TICKET PRICES: We believe it is unacceptable to charge up to $350 for a single ticket… We believe a band needing to charge $85 — $100 for upper balcony seats is a band no longer in touch with their fan base. We demand the ticket price for the next tour to be no more than $30 and without any and all service charges.
3) WE WANT A SET LIST OVERHAUL: With an immense back catalog of songs to choose from, there is no reason why The Rolling Stones need to stick to roughly the same 30 songs for every tour… We demand the following songs not to be played on the next tour: “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Brown Sugar,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Start Me Up,” “Sympathy for the Devil.”
4) WE WANT THE ELIMINATION OF THE HORN SECTION AND BACK-UP SINGERS: We believe The Rolling Stones have drifted too far from the true and basic rock and roll aesthetic. It’s time to bring it back, back at least to the hugely successful 1978 Some Girls tour.
5) WE WANT THE EXPULSION OF ALL OPENING ACTS: We believe The Rolling Stones have stopped challenging themselves. There was a time when they would bring an opening band talented enough to challenge the Stones themselves, who, in turn, would have to step it up even further… How challenging can it be to follow Third Eye Blind? How challenging can it be to follow Jonny Lang or the damn Spin Doctors?
6) WE WANT ALL FANS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEMSELVES: We believe the fault also lies with fans willing to do the bidding of their favorite band, no matter the cost. How many suckers does it take to fill an auditorium? Ask The Rolling Stones… We urge all self-respecting Rolling Stones fans to heed our warnings and join our ranks. Don’t be taken for granted… Why give them more of our money and then settle for the usual? We won’t.
The Stones still haven’t announced their plans for their 50th anniversary. As for the demands, a spokeswoman for the Stones was unavailable for comment.
I went through all the videos from bands and artists that performed on my show this year and was blown away by all the great memories!
One I will remember for the rest of my life was THE DOOBIE BROTHERS asking me to sing BLACK WATER. In the middle of the performance! Unreal. Thank god I was basically in key…or this would not be the first video in my Best of 2011!

When NICKEL CREEK said, farewell for now, we all knew we would get some superb music from the gang, as they explored solo projects and new groups. Chris Thile seems to really be enjoying himself here with his new band, THE PUNCH BROTHERS. This recording is coming from two room mics. Simply amazing.
MOON TAXI – I love this Nashville band. It’s been so much fun watching them grow into the stars they have yet to become. Their new album CABARET drops in the beginning of February. 2012 will be the year of MOON TAXI!

This method of cooking the turkey is from the San Francisco Fire Department in the 1960′s. I’ve never cooked a turkey any other way, and I’ve Never had it fail. Moist and Sweet, easy to carve, with plenty of juice for gravy.
Knowing that your turkey will be done to perfection in Three Hours takes all the guess-work out of planning your meal. Want to eat at 4pm? put your bird in the oven at 12:30p (the extra 1/2-hour allows time for the turkey to Rest for 20 minutes before carving).
(although the instructions appear to be lengthy, the method itself is very simple. I just wanted to make it as clear as possible. )
Turkey truss-ers (I don’t know what to call them – those sharp pointy skewers) and kitchen string
Large paper grocery bag
Crisco Shortening
Lawry’s Garlic Salt (or any “california style” garlic salt will do)
Stapler
Preheat oven to 500 degrees.
Preparing the Turkey:
About one hour before before you plan to put the bird in the oven:
o remove giblets from cavities (*if using a frozen turkey, see note below).
o rinse turkey, inside and out, under cold running water removing fatty deposits from the cavities, and any pin feathers.
o Using old bath towels, thoroughly dry turkey inside and out.
o If you stuff your bird, do so now and truss. (note: No matter what your stuffing recipe instructs, you don’t need to add liquid to your dressing. Leave it dry or you might have mush. Trust me.)
o If you do not stuff your bird, place whole onions, apples, and/or other veggies in cavities, and truss.
o Generously spread shortening on entire outside of bird (skin must be dry or shortening will not stick).
o Generously sprinkle garlic salt over bird.
o okay… this part takes two people (**see my method below): Stand paper grocery bag in roasting pan and put bird into bag and, folding over the end of bag once or twice, staple shut.
o Lay bagged bird breast-side-up in pan making sure that the paper bag doesn’t hang over the edges of the pan.
o Press bag closely against turkey. Using more shortening, grease outside of bag. Any spot left ungreased (especially those not touching turkey) will burn and you will lose some of your juices.
o Place turkey into preheated 500 degree oven and set timer for One Hour. It is Very Important that you do Not open the oven door for the next Three hours. Guard oven carefully against nosy guests – Duct Tape it shut if you have to. (lol)
o After One Hour, lower oven setting to 400 degrees, and re-set timer for One Hour.
o One Hour later, lower oven setting to 300 degrees, and re-set timer for One Hour.
Ding Ding Ding… Remove bird from oven; wait a bit, and then gently tear paper bag from top of turkey. Invite everyone into kitchen to ooh and ahh… take a bow.
o After 20 minutes of rest, move turkey to carving board, and do what you do.
*Frozen Turkey must be thoroughly defrosted. No ice inside, no frozen leg joints. This method will fail otherwise.
**Bring a kitchen chair to the counter and place your roasting pan on it. Stand the large grocery bag in pan. Have your helper (men are so handy) lift the turkey and slide it into the bag. It’s easiest to staple the bag shut at this point. Lay bagged turkey breast-side-up into pan.
I would love to hear from you if you try this method. It makes cooking the turkey Fun!
Feist will return with a new album called Metals on October 4th. It’s her first studio album since her 2007 breakthrough The Reminder. She once again worked with her long time collaborators Chilly Gonzales and Mocky.

It’s Sunday now. Our last day at Bonnaroo. It has flown by again! I’ve been backstage missing most of the shows. I kind of have my own private Bonnaroo going on though, so there are no complaints! Right now Widespread Panic just stopped by for a backstage performance. Their bass player, Dave Schools, will be doing a short interview directly after. Sounding amazing!! We also have our fingers crossed that Robert Plant will have time to stop by! G Love, Galactic, Cold War Kids, and Bruce Hornsby are all stopping by as well. Life is good!
Saturday update! They will not be up for long, but I have permission to stream the Backstage at Bonnaroo performances this weekend. So soak them up and enjoy! There are a lot of cool new bands that you will be hearing about in the future. Plus some favorites from bands you already love! I’ll continue to add them here with information today and tomorrow. We have 39 bands stopping by for a quick chat and performance. I’m not sure if I am allowed to post the performances but I can definitely post the interviews I record. This footage is separate from the coverage, Wells Adams, Brian Waters, Jayson Chalfant, and Justin Hammel are bringing you. It is made available to radio stations from all over the country and world.
In honor of Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday, here is his son, Jakob Dylan of The Wallflowers, with solo performances of “Nothin’ But the Whole Wide World” and “Everybody’s Hurting” in the Lightning 100 studios.

The Civil Wars stopped by the Lightning 100 studios on May 10th, 2011. We discussed their new album, Barton Hollow. They performed two tracks live and blew us away yet again!

It’s Lightning 100′s Lt. Dan and I wish I could share these videos with the whole world! Well, I kind of am aren’t I? You know what I mean, right? Anyhow, I just discovered three videos from my show that I think will blow you away.
This is a video of Chris Thile’s band, “The Punch Brothers”. They are tremendously talented musicians. I love how the stand up bass sounds in the mix. They brought their own mic’s too, which didn’t work as well for the interview portion, but sound great with the instruments.
This is Abigail Washburn. She is a Nashville based musician (married to Bela Fleck) that has a really interesting story. After a disappointing trip to China, she became inspired to return and soak in the culture. It led her to learn the language and she almost went to law school there. Instead she’s been on a musical adventure and just released her third full length studio effort. It’s her first album without any Chinese lyrics. She worked with former, “Tommy and the Whale” songwriter, Kai Welch. I really enjoyed having them on the show and think the video turned out great.
Here is a video of Nashville based band, “The Apache Relay”. This song is on their forthcoming album, “American Nomad”. These guys are definitely on their way to big things. Their friendship with, “Mumford and Sons”, isn’t going to hurt them either. The album comes out next month and they also have an in-store at Grimey’s in the near future.
This past Friday Lt. Dan went scuba diving for the very first time with Lightning 100′s Team Green Adventures. The Good folks at http://divebelowh2o.com took us to the YMCA in Donnelson. We spent two hours in the pool. First learning how to snorkel, then how to scuba dive.
Dan said he was nervous at first but within a few minutes was hooked!

The legendary, David Bromberg, stopped by the Lightning 100 studios earlier this year. He was performing later that night at 3rd & Lindsley and gave us a great interview with two live songs.

Who is David Bromberg?
He’s played with everyone, he’s toured everywhere, he can lead a raucous big band or hold an audience silent with a solo acoustic blues. Here’s the story of David Bromberg, or at least some of it . . .
Born in Philadelphia in 1945 and raised in Tarrytown, NY, “as a kid I listened to rock ’n’ roll and whatever else was on the radio,” says Bromberg. “I discovered Pete Seeger and The Weavers and, through them, Reverend Gary Davis. I then discovered Big Bill Broonzy, who led me to Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. This was more or less the same time I discovered Flatt and Scruggs, which led to Bill Monroe and Doc Watson.”
Bromberg began studying guitar-playing when he was 13 and eventually enrolled in Columbia University as a musicology major. The call of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the mid-’60s drew David to the downtown clubs and coffeehouses, where he could watch and learn from the best performers, including primary sources such as his inspiration and teacher, the Reverend Gary Davis.
Bromberg’s sensitive and versatile approach to guitar-playing earned him jobs playing the Village “basket houses” for tips, the occasional paying gig, and lots of employment as a backing musician for Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. He became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, and Carly Simon.
An unexpected and wildly successful solo spot at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to a solo deal with Columbia Records, for whom David recorded four albums. His eponymous 1971 debut not only included the mock-anguished “Suffer to Sing the Blues,” a Bromberg original that became an FM radio staple, but also “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle George Harrison, whom he met at his manager’s Thanksgiving dinner festivities. Harrison also played slide guitar on the track. Through Bromberg’s manager, Al Aronowitz, David also met the Grateful Dead and wound up with four of their members, including Jerry Garcia, playing on his next two albums.
Bromberg’s range of material, based in the folk and blues idioms, continually expanded with each new album to encompass bluegrass, ragtime, country and ethnic music, and his touring band grew apace. By the mid-’70s, the David Bromberg Big Band included horn-players, a violinist, and several multi-instrumentalists, including David himself. Among the best-known Bromberg Band graduates: mandolinist Andy Statman, later a major figure in the Klezmer music movement in America, and fiddler Jay Ungar (who wrote the memorable “Ashokan Farewell” for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary, “The Civil War”).
Despite jubilant, loose-limbed concerts and a string of acclaimed albums on the Fantasy label, Bromberg found himself exhausted by the logistics of the music business. “I decided to change the direction of my life,” he explains. So David dissolved his band in 1980, and he and his artist/musician wife, Nancy Josephson, moved from Northern California to Chicago, where David attended the Kenneth Warren School of Violin Making. Though he still toured periodically, the recordings slowed to a trickle and then stopped.
After “too many Chicago winters,” in 2002 David and Nancy were lured to Wilmington, Del., where they became part of the city’s artist-in-residence program and where David could establish David Bromberg Fine Violins, a retail store and repair shop for high quality instruments. Frequent participation in the city’s weekly jam sessions helped rekindle Bromberg’s desire to make music again, as did the encouragement of fellow musicians Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Desert Rose Band, Flying Burrito Brothers) and bluegrass wizard Herb Pedersen, and David’s manager, Steve Bailey. The jams also led to the formation of Angel Band, fronted by Nancy and two other female vocalists, with David serving as an accompanist.

It is our fourth day and I’ve almost survived the weekend! Only three bands left!!! We kicked it off this morning with, They Might Be Giants. Then we had, Everest, Medeski Martin and Wood, Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, and Phoenix. Calexico is performing right now and coming in next for an interview. Then we will have, John Butler Trio and Martin Sexton. It has been another great adventure!
We have two days left of Backstage craziness. Avett Brothers and Nortec Collective have already been here and a band called, Truth & Salvage, is performing right now. They have some amazing harmonies! I haven’t heard of them yet but that isn’t the first time I have discovered a band here!
We are pretty sure that when John Prine comes over this afternoon, Old Crow Medicine Show, will be backing him! We are also getting, Mumford and Sons! They popped in before dropping off their gear and heading over to the Lunar stage to watch the Fifa World Cup! The crowd over there is going to be insane!
We also have the Dead Weather popping by the studio for a quick interview!!!
Brandi Carlile, Caitlin Rose, and Dave Rawlings Machine will be popping by as well!

Friday is here and the day is flying by already! We have twelve bands on the books today. Our morning started with the, Carolina Chocolate Drops at 9am. They were dressed to impress and sounded amazing. A wonderful way to wake up and start the day.
Chris Thile and his band, Punch Brothers, dropped by at 10am. They were really decked out, wearing some snazzy suits! They performed with only two microphones in the Grand Ole Opry style! Very fun!
The band, Dawes, came over at 11am, to show off their brotherly harmonies! Their have an album out on ATO Records, which they recorded without any computers. They also have a pretty cool fan named, Bill Murray! In their interview they told a great story about wild Bill!

Our first band of the day / year came over at 2pm. They are called, The Constellations and came from Atlanta, Georgia. They are a party band with a reputation for music!
