Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, Nashville natives and those who wish they were: the time is upon us. It is officially the 2013 Lightning 100’s Live on the Green season. You better have an escape route from your office to the parking lot planned, because you are going to want to dip out a little early for the next 6 Thursdays. Like everything else in Nashville, Live on the Green has only been getting bigger and better over the past 5 years. With that in mind, we are proud to bring you the most high profile line up we have ever had. Every single artist performing tomorrow could have been a headliner in years past, making the tomorrow night’s kickoff the perfect way to start your weekend. So before you head on down to Public Square Park to enjoy the great weather, local craft beers, delicious food trucks, and fantastic musical acts, lets take a look at tomorrow’s line up.
Matt and Kim
Ask anyone who has been to a Matt and Kim concert and they will tell you the same thing: This power couple’s synth pop brings the heat extremely hard but don’t let that fool you. Their signature brand of sugary-sweet anthems are a surefire way to get anyone with ears moving and grooving. Based out of Brooklyn, these lovebirds didn’t even know how to play their instruments when they met at Pratt Institute. They’re self-titled release was an underground phenomenon that everyone in east village had to have, and the rest is history. Matt and Kim have been touring the globe non-stop since 2008 and have seriously honed their craft. This is certainly a show you do not want to miss.
This overnight sensation is a hard artist to peg into just one sound, which is exactly why Lightning 100 has loved her since day one. Drawing influence from old blues artists like Son House, having pipes that would rival Aretha Franklin’s, and an album collaboration with Kendrick Lamar indicate that she really knows her stuff. Her debut EP was shortly followed by the breakout album Til the Casket Drops, and her performance at SXSW garnered an almost unreal amount of buzz on internet blogs. Check out ZZ Ward performing Drive Like U Stole It before you see her tomorrow at Live on the Green.
Gin Wigmore may claim to be a black sheep, but she has been earning the attention of professional songwriters and producers since she won the International Songwriting Competition at the age of 18. Her sound is aggressive and sultry, bluesy and distorted, and sexy as all get out. The success of her most recent album, Gravel and Wine, has landed her songs in several shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Teen Wolf. Chances are if you turned on a TV in the past year, you’ve heard a Gin Wigmore song. Check out Gin and her band of hell raisers here.
ZZ Ward stopped by Lightning 100 for an in-studio performance before her show at 12th and Porter. She performs her single “Put the Gun Down” which you’ve been hearing on Lightning 100. How do you like the acoustic version of the song? ZZ Ward also performs a slower ballad entitled “Last Love Song” from Til the Casket Drops. ZZ Ward will be returning to town on March 10th for Nashville Sunday Night. Click here to get your tickets before they sell out!
Up-and-coming artist ZZ Ward stopped by the studio before her show at Exit/In. Check out ZZ Ward live performance “Put the Gun Down” and “Last Love Song” on 11-13-12. ZZ Ward also talks about the start of her career with Lightning 100’s Wells Adams.
ZZ Ward was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Oregon, in a small town called Roseburg. She grew up listening to my Dad write and sing the blues and started performing with him in his blues bands. She fell in love with the sincerity of Etta, the soul of Muddy and the power of Big Mama. When I got older ZZ Ward started writing hooks for and performing with local rappers from Eugene. She fell in love with hip-hop, with it’s authenticity….now she is married to em both. DIRTY SHINE!
