Lightning 100 had a great 2012….for in-studio performances! We made a list of our some of our favorite performances from the year, click here to see the full list.
Imagine Dragons – Radioactive We gave 20 lucky fans the chance to see a private performance with Imagine Dragons before their sold out show at Cannery Ballroom. One of our listeners included lead singer, Dan Reynolds, younger brother who won tickets during the lunch request hour. Watch Imagine Dragons performs “Radioactive” live at Lightning 100. Click here to see the band perform their big single “It’s Time” live in our studio.
Alabama Shakes – Hold On Band of Horses used to wear the crown for biggest crowd at Live On the Green until Alabama Shakes performed in 2012. Check out Alabama Shakes performance “Hold On” at Live On the Green. Filmed and edited by Make It Pop
Passion Pit – Take A Walk Passion Pit performs in front of a few fans in Griffin Technology’s Pre-Show Live event at Marathon Music Works. The band was running late, so we had to cut out the interview. Michael Angelakos, lead singer of Passion Pit was a little offended by this. Check out this live version of “Take A Walk”. We’ve also recorded “Constant Conversations” and “Sleepyheads” at the show.
The Lumineers – Classy Girl
If you heard The Lumineers first on Lightning 100, you’ve got Wells Adams to thank for that. After a few weeks of playing “Ho Hey” during our music meetings, the song made it to the airwaves. Lightning 100 was one of the first stations in the country to play The Lumineers…..and now you hear them everywhere.
Walk The Moon – Anna Sun
The young up-and-coming band Walk the Moon stopped by the studio without their face paint. Check out their performance “Anna Sun” live at Lightning 100. We’ve also got a recording of “Tightrope” on our HD On-demand Page. Read more
We were very happy to get Delta Spirit back in Nashville to perform at Live On the Green with The Wallflowers! Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit stopped by the studio to perform “Empty House” and “Tear It Up” before the show! We also posted a video by Make It Pop from Live On the Green with Delta Spirit performing “Parade”. Click here to check out the videos!
Lightning 100 had a great turnout for our first Live On the Green of 2012! Click here to check out pictures from Dr. John, Moon Taxi, and Jon Cleary. Want to experience LOTG as a Lightning 100 VIP? Delta Spirit performed at Nashville Sunday Night back in 2008 in support of Ode to Sunshine. Check out Lightning 100′s footage from the show! They look so young…or can you tell? Delta Spirit performs St. Francis on NSN, which later came out on History from Below.
Matt Vasquez from Delta Spirit joined us in the studio before his show at Cannery Ballroom. The other guys apparently wanted to “sleep in”, but we’ve just got a hunch that they remembered the small size of our studio. Check out this solo performance of the sad version of “California” and Matt’s first solo live performance of “Yahama”. We’ve been playing “California” on Lightning 100, any other songs on the album you would like to hear? Leave a comment below and let us know. Click here to see our other in-studios with Delta Spirit.
Lightning 100 introduced you to Delta Spirit in 2009 at Nashville Sunday Night. We were so impressed we had the guys in the next day for an in-studio performance! Click here to see the performances from Nashville Sunday Night and the Lightning 100 studio.
Delta Spirit will be releasing a new, full length album on March 13th. It will be a different type of album featuring drum machines and samples and was produced by Chris Coady, who has previously worked with such groups as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio.
Have you heard of this new super group called Middle Brother??? Middle Brother is Matt Vasquez, John J. McCauley III and Taylor Goldsmith. I’m sure you’re familiar with Matt Vasquez indirectly. He is the lead singer of Delta Spirit. A band we play frequently on Lightning 100. The other two guys… Well it’s just a matter of time. Goldsmith is the lead singer of Dawes. A indie/rock band out of California, you have probably heard the Dawes song “When My Time Comes” on a recent Chevy commercial. McCauley of Deer Tick fronts the indie/folk band out of Providence, Rhode Island. The last time I saw Deer Tick was when they opened for Dr. Dog at the Cannery Ballroom a while back. (They had a huge following back then.)
Now that you know the cast of characters.. Lets talk about this new record. It hasn’t come out of my car CD player since it dropped in stores. When I bought the LP, I was hoping it would consist primarily of Vasquez. I am a huge Delta Spirit fan. This was not the case. In hindsight, I couldn’t be happier about this. The record really showcases McCauley of Deer Tick, of whom I knew the least. That has changed as of late. All 3 guys really compliment one another very well, with beautiful lyrics and raspy delivery. The whole LP is good. But if you want to save some money and only buy a few tracks I would suggest the title track “Middle Brother,” the 1st track “Daydreaming” and a the last track on the A side called “Portland.”
You have been forewarned. Go forth and make good life/music decisions.
Delta Spirit will be coming into the Lightning 100 studio today at 2:30 to talk about their new record “History From Below” and playing us a few tunes. The boys from San Diego will be playing tonight at Mercy Lounge w/ Darker My Love and The Fling. You can get your tickets now at our Concert Page. Here is a video from the last time they were in the studio…This should get you ready for tonight!
I know, I know… it’s been almost a month since my last post. Lets just say 2010 has been kicking my a$$ with a wedding, crossword puzzles, beverages, darts, and work. Back on it though. Let’s hope for good this time. I have written a couple posts about some local bands, but am waiting for a good video to post. Gotta keep moving along now. This one is about ‘Delta Spirit’. They have a ridiculously great album called ‘Ode To Sunshine’ that I can listen to over and over again. It came out in 2007 or ’08 and I really don’t think I’m tired of any of it still. I had the distinct pleasure of catching their set at Bonnaroo last year and hope to see them at least 53 more times this year. The guys voice is so powerful and still sincere. The slow songs are gorgeous… the fast songs are great and def. radio worthy. Go buy the record NOW and hopefully we’ll be seeing another one from them very soon. I’m going to introduce you to 2 of my favorite websites too.
First is ‘Daytrotter’. They post new song sessions everyday with different artists and ‘Delta Spirit’ has been a guest at least 3 times. The first link I’m posting has a Paul Simon cover called
‘Duncan’ and a wonderfully slow song called ‘House Built For Two’.
Thirdly, I’m posting a link to another wonderful site from across the pond called ‘La Blogotheque’. They do some amazing videos and kinda just let the artists do whatever they wanna do. I highly recommend wasting at least 12 days on this site. This is ‘People Turn Around’
Here’s the blogotheque version of ‘Trashcan’ too… wish i could’ve been on that trolley
