Hamilton Leithauser and Kevin Morby prepare fans for their upcoming tour together with their latest and collaborative single, “Virginia Beach”. The artists bring their unique sounds together to create the single that’s featured as Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week.
Last week, Kevin Morby and Hamilton Leithauser released “Virginia Beach,” just days before the start of their tour. Before the tour started, they wanted to create a song that pays homage to the traveling musician and the odd places one has to go. In a statement, Morby focused on what drew him to help create “Virginia Beach.”
“I found myself compelled to write of all the bizarre yet beautiful corners of America one often overlooks that a touring musician inevitably finds themselves in while out on the road… Cities that down-and-out characters race towards in an attempt to outrun themselves.“
The single’s haunting lyrics are fitting for the misfits who runaway to these towns to lose themselves. “And never ever did I think I’d meet / Oh the devil from behind the sink / Just a smiling staring back at me / I put my hand to the mirror dear / And then he disappeared”. It’s a look into the darkness that can surround musicians and how they avoid these feelings in their music. It’s beautiful and poetic, but it also shows the ugly truth of what can come out of this lifestyle.
The lyric video fits the song perfectly with its black and white collaged scenes. Its symbolic images paired with Morby and Leithauser’s words makes for the perfect match. Check out the video below:
As Leithauser and Morby continue with their Fall tour, fans should get excited for the show they are bound to put on. With a single that shows off their collaborative abilities perfectly, this tour should be one for the books.
