Happy International Women’s Day! To show our support to the incredible women musicians out there the DJs decided to pick songs created by powerful women this week. Today’s pick goes to Katie Toupin for her latest release, “Astronaut”. After departing from the American alternative band, Houndmouth, Toupin decided to take a couple years off from releasing music in order to find herself. Thankfully for her fans, she began to put out solo music in 2018. Her most recent song that we are spotlighting today was released on March 3rd this year.
Toupin was inspired to write “Astronaut” while spending time at her mother’s house in quarantine post touring. The idea for the song came to her as she was in the basement looking at her nieces old toys. During this time she began reflecting on how it felt to be a hopeful child. The song is about the nostalgia she feels when she thinks back to being young and having the ability to dream big things. The upbeat, feel-good track is full of dreamy vocals and catchy melodies.
The music video for the song actually features Toupin and her 7-year-old niece dressed up as astronauts. Toupin represents adulthood in the video and her niece represents the hopeful inner child. The video itself is extremely heart warming as you can see the close bond the two share. Check it out below!
