What do you get when you mix 60s pop vocals, indie rock energy, and the occasional country guitar lick? Meet CATES, an inventive Nashville-based indie band and our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week. Previously, CATES released Work from Home, a brilliantly relatable reflection on the darkest moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the help of *repeat repeat’s Jared Corder in the producer’s seat, CATES ascends to new heights on their recently released single “Turn off Your Radio.”

Full of garage rock fun, “Turn off Your Radio” utilizes lo-fi, percussive vocals to push the already fast-feeling tune to a breakneck speed. However, beneath this exciting atmosphere lurks a foundation of genuine personal tragedy. The lyrics of “Turn off Your Radio” depict a desperate narrator begging their self-destructive romantic partner to change their ways. By bounding this plea up into the euphemistic request to “turn off your radio,” CATES crafts a song which will make you headbang and cry simultaneously. To see CATES in action, come out to the Light the Nations fest on October 15th, and make sure to listen to their new single below!

Tune in to 100.1 FM and lightning100.com all week to hear “Turn off Your Radio” by CATES, our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week.
