Keith’s DJ pick this week is Death Cab for Cutie’s “Roman Candles.” This is first released single for the Washington-based group’s upcoming LP Asphalt Meadows. Since their first release in the late 90s, Death Cab for Cutie has had an influential impact on the indie-rock and “emo” genre. Original members, Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla are huge contributors to the band’s continued success.
Throughout all of their past albums and LPs, the band has consistently relied on deeply symbolic lyrics and meanings for their song content. These heavy themes are present in the band’s newest release, as well. In a public statement, the band says, “Roman Candles’ is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet.” The band’s official music video furthers these anxiety inducing thoughts by pairing the fast-paced tempo with glimpses of an even faster-paced world.
