A nostalgic retelling of the digital age transformation of Nashville, “Ain’t How It Used to Be” shows life through the eyes of lifelong Nashvillian and alternative country artist Will Hoge. Though “everything’s practically perfect” after the money came in, Hoge still has a hard time coming to terms with the city’s loss of charm, as he laments a string of local business closures over the years. An entire way of life built around slow living and the American dream has slipped away, leaving behind the hyper-professional world of new Nashville, a world that seems better in every way but just feels a little off to people like Hoge.
Sonically, the roots Americana sound that Hoge brings to this story significantly strengthens his point of view. Not only does Hoge fondly remember the old Nashville, but he actively recreates this forgotten city in his work, keeping this memory alive for a new generation who only knows Nashville as Nashvegas.
