This week, Rev. Keith’s DJ Pick is “Pepper” by Death Cab for Cutie! “Pepper” made its debut on Death Cab for Cutie’s tenth studio album titled “Asphalt Meadows” this past September. “Pepper” is the seventh track on the album written by both lead singer Ben Gibbard and keyboardist Zac Rae. The song perfectly encapsulates a traditional indie sound and displays a melancholic message as the lyrics discuss the ending of a relationship and the aftermath of a breakup. The band states how post separation, “all that’s left is a version of the truth. A recollection that is often misconstrued.”
“Pepper” is a great example of the incredible talent this band has. The juxtaposition of the upbeat instrumental in the chorus, partnered with lyrics, “Kiss me just this one last time, Tell me that you once were mine, Kiss me just this one last time, Show me that your love was mine,” shows the phenomenal songwriting skills of Death Cab for Cutie.
