Dan’s DJ Pick this week is “See It Through” by Durand Jones! This easygoing soul-pop song is the second single from Jones’ debut solo album Wait Til I Get Over.
“See It Through” serves as a sincere and fun moment on the back half of Jones’ acclaimed debut record, deemed one of the best 50 of the year so far by Billboard. The song’s lyrics see Jones taking on the role of advice-giver. At its core, this is a song telling listeners not to give up even when they’re faced with difficult circumstances. Jones acknowledges the stresses, pressures and outside judgment that can accompany hard times. Jones’ advice? “Keep your head to sky / don’t let ‘em take your peace of mind.”
Listening to this song is like getting a hug and a pep talk from someone you love and look up to when you need it most. It’s also so danceable and groovy, with a rock flare that’s highlighted by an amazing bluesy guitar solo. “See It Through” is altogether optimistic, persevering, and positive in a genuine, understated way.
It’s an exciting time for Jones, who is striking out with a solo project for the first time since he formed his band Durand Jones & The Indications over a decade ago in 2012. If you want to witness Jones perform his work as a soloist live, you’re in luck. You can catch him on tour across the United States this fall. If you’re 18 or older, be sure to get tickets to Jones’ stop in Music City on October 10 at Exit/In.
