Keith’s DJ pick this week is “Dreaming Out Loud” by Gov’t Mule! This is the first single off their upcoming album, Peace… Like A River, set to release this June.
The brilliant four-piece band consists of Warren Haynes (guitar, vocals), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboard, guitar), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass). Originally based in Atlanta, Gov’t Mule formed in 1994 as a spinoff of The Allman Brothers Band. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, and Black Sabbath, the group released their self-titled debut album in 1995. 10 years later, the band had already cultivated huge success with their live performances, becoming a staple act at Bonnaroo, New Orleans JazzFest, Mountain Jam, and Wakarusa. As of 2023, the band is signed with Fantasy Records and has amassed over 30 million streams on Spotify.
“Dreaming Out Loud” is a bluesy anthem featuring the legendary vocals of Ivan Neville and Ruthie Foster. Thematically, the song explores the significant changes the world has seen over the last few decades. Frontman Haynes blends inspirational words spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, John Lewis, and John F. Kennedy into the “Dreaming Out Loud” lyrics. Influenced by “the golden era of rock, soul, jazz, and blues, Gov’t Mule combines the best and most enduring qualities from all those musical strains to create a timeless piece of art on Peace…Like A River that could have easily come out in the 1970s.”
Tune in all day to hear “Dreaming Out Loud” by Gov’t Mule! Local fans can catch them playing live at The Ryman on May 12. Also, be sure to check out Peace… Like A River this June!
