This week’s ONErpm Hitmaker Alert goes to Julia Pratt for her latest release, “Julia, Baby.” This slow-building waltz is a ballad of self-awareness told through her signature blend of genres. As her fourth release of the year, the anticipation for this track was well deserved.
Though Pratt is only 22 years old, she is well established in the industry. She has shared the stage and collaborated with several artists, including fellow Philly natives, Mt. Joy, for her release “A Little Love.” Pulling inspiration from songwriters like Amy Winehouse and Hozier, Pratt often explores the concept of the self, love, and betrayal throughout her writing. Pratt is known for blurring the lines between genres like pop, R&B, jazz, and folk. “Julia, Baby” perfectly displays her exemplary lyricism paired with a modern interpretation of this genre fusion.
“Julia, Baby” tells the story of a relationship that has run its course, coming to an end with an ultimatum. Pratt, through the perspective of the other person, begs herself, “Julia, baby, you’re trying to change me. You gotta decide if you love me or hate me.” Building a wall of sound that smacks the listener through layered vocals throughout the chorus and intense lyrics, we can’t help but sympathize with the song’s subject. Pratt adds depth and emotion to this track with an impressive display of her vocal abilities. The production of this track is not only dynamic, complex, and reflective of the song’s content, but it is also a model of modern pop production.
