Mel’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Late Riser” by Okey Dokey! Released on March 24, 2023, this is Okey Dokey’s latest release. Based right here in Nashville, Tennessee, the band is made up of members Johny Fisher and Aaron Martin. Briefly playing in the band Sol Cat together in 2013, Martin left to pursue more art-related projects. Reuniting with Fisher to make music a few years later, they released their debut album Love You, Mean It in 2017. Releasing three more albums since then, Okey Dokey are indie music veterans.
“Late Riser” feels like the perfect mix between MGMT, Tame Impala, and Wallows. Incorporating falsetto, harmonies, and switching up the instrumentals in certain sections, “Late Riser” is cool, calm, and collected. Also reminiscent of “Sober” by Childish Gambino, this song is atmospheric and whimsical. If you’re looking for a great track to study to or listen to on a drive, “Late Riser” is the song for you.
