Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week is “My Room” by Ty Segall!
With over 14 studio albums already recorded, Ty Segall is no stranger to the art of producing hit singles. His upcoming album, Three Bells, claims to be a story about self–reflection. Three Bells will be available on January 26th, followed by a headline tour across the US. Some musical influences behind his artistry include David Bowie, Black Sabbath, and The Beatles. Ty also draws inspiration from the early 2000s garage rock scene in San Francisco, where he went to college.
“My Room” is the third single off of Three Bells. This song is about finding comfort within familiarity, whether it be in a place or a person. It opens with fuzzy guitars and a simple bass line, which plays the same melodies throughout the entire song. The artistic choice to have the instrumentation stay consistent could be to mirror the song’s theme- why introduce a different melody when you have one that works? The last few lines of the song, “I’ve heard nothing, I’ll just keep waiting by my door in case I hear you knocking,” lead into the outro full of bright guitar distortion. “My Room” is a strong experimental single to build excitement for Three Bells.
