This week’s DJ pick of the week is “Prizefighter” by Youth Lagoon! This is one of the newest songs from the new album Heaven is a Junkyard. This album is the first album after a nearly seven year hiatus.
Youth Lagoon was formed in 2010 by American musician Trevor Powers. His music has undergone a number of evolutions over the years. He started off as a small town musician and eventually graduated to the sound he has today. Heaven is a Junk Yard is the first album to be released since 2016 after a hiatus. In 2021, Trevor Power lost his voice for nearly 8 months leading to him thinking his career was over. Surprisingly, Trevor is thankful for the experience as he has credited it for giving him a new perspective on life.
Trevor Power’s music implements elements of pop, psychedelic, and some elements of Americana. The song “prizefighter” is about Trevor Powers siblings he grew up with. Trevor had this to say about the song from a Stereogum interview, “I grew up with 3 of them, so our house was doomsday but with more sugar cereal. “Our love was strong and so was our barbarity.”
