Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Peace Song” by Fat Dog
Fresh off the heels of a successful album, Fat Dog is already back with a new single titled “Peace Song”. If you’re like me, you might recognize their name from to their involvement in the British post-punk revival scene also known to the chronically online as “crank wave” or “The Windmill scene”. The Windmill is a pub/venue in Briston that is known in recency as a birthplace of new-wave post-punk/rock giants, with bands like Black Midi, Squid, and Black Country, New Road citing them as champions of their music early on. Now, Fat Dog looks to be the newest rising star in this prog-rock nursery.
Fat Dog is one of those bands that you can’t quite categorize, however, and the term prog-rock doesn’t fully encapsulate the audio experience of a Fat Dog song. After gaining local clout through boisterous live shows, fans were treated to one of the most interesting and engaging debuts of 2023 with the 7-minute techno-punk adventure, “King of the Slugs”, that finds itself unexpectedly reminiscent of the classic Jewish folk song, “Hava Nagelia”.
While their newest single isn’t quite as boundary-defying, Fat Dog proves that they can perfectly combine radio-friendly sensibilities with the creative compositions that created their cult following in the first place. “Peace Song” shamelessly showcases cranked bass, tight drum tones, and lyrics filled with an air of optimistic nihilism. Lines like “I’m in love with the world” and “It’s the day you’re going to die” paint a hopeless lover who understands the finiteness of reality. This is the perfect song for the current era of popular culture where 2010’s “recession pop” and “indie sleaze” aesthetics are trending among young adults. People want to forget their worries to thumping kicks and Fat Dog has provided the perfect track, whether you find yourself at the club or simply driving home from work with your tuner set to 100.1.
