Rev’s DJ pick of the week is “House Parties” by Dawes.

This is an interesting time for the Laurel Canyon rock band Dawes. Since their last album the band has halved in size and seen a new direction in sound that left many fans questioning the future of the beloved and reliable rockers. Brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith quell any fears and remain true to their 2015 anthem, leaving a blessing upon listeners saying “may all your favorite bands stay together.”

“House Parties” sounds like Dawes is in classic form. Taylor’s poignant and revealing lyrical prowess is on display in the new single. Dawes talks the existential while reminding you that maybe you don’t need to think about it that hard. Life can be just as deep from the philosopher’s seat as it is next to some joint-toting Joni Mitchell fans.

At its core, “House Parties” is about the sacred experience of seeing a place as a local does. In a recent newsletter post (talkback with Dawes), Taylor explained how culture cannot be invaded or dropped in on. It’s not on demand, as our culture is so used to with our top ten places to visit lists and carefully curated “how to experience X city” blog posts. Taylor makes the case that the culture of a place can only be experienced by doing the work to become apart of it, or being graciously hosted by a local themselves. He describes it as “a big fat thank you” to all those who have shown Dawes the local experience over the years. It is a celebration of authenticity, and a challenge to sink your teeth into those real moments whenever you can find them.

Long-time listeners may notice an alteration in production from the new single. This may be due to the departure of bassist Wylie Gelber and virtuoso keyboardist Lee Pardini, leaving drummer Griffin Goldsmith and guitarist/vocalist Taylor Goldsmith to carry on the Dawes banner. The single proceeds the upcoming full LP release of Oh Brother on October 11th, 2024.

In preparation for the music video, Dawes called upon their fans on various social media platforms to send in their best party clips. The final product couldn’t be more fitting for the track and greater identity of the band. Dawes has always been something between a group of musicians and those that listen to their music, this music video showcases that relationship perfectly. Go to a house party this weekend, it’s better than broadway will ever be.
