“The Groke” by Okay Kaya is our ONErpm Hitmaker this week!

Okay Kaya is a Norwegian-American artist originating from New Jersey. She has collaborated with artists including Baba Stilz, Onyx Collective, Anne Imhof, Porches, King Krule, and more. She has also been featured by several outlets, such as Pitchfork, Blogotheque, ARTE tracks, and DIY. Kaya is known by fans across the world for her distinct mystical and moody tone and her unmistakable songwriting.

Her work often explores the relationship between nature and humans, giving the music a spiritual-like aura. Her 2020 album Watch This Liquid Pour Itself found great success. Notably the single “Mother Nature’s Bitch”, which has become a staple in a modern-witches playlist.

“The Groke” is Okay Kaya’s first release since the 2022 single, “Inside of a Plum”.

In “The Groke” she combines her trademark songwriting style that juxtaposes the unglamorousness, instinctiveness, and emotional toils of the human experience with saccharine sweet, rapturing vocal melodies. The chugging bass and fierce flute playing give way to a strong intriguing instrumental track, begging you to listen to the details. Although the theme of the song might be a little dark, the alt-disco backing will make you tap your foot. The single is the result of an artist grappling with perception in an age of hyper-presence online. Inspired by readings of poetry (Edgar Allen Poe), philosophy, and nature in her new-found, island home in Norway.
