Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Tuesday” by Toro y Moi!
Toro y Moi is tired of the cookie-cutter. Tired of the boring. Tired of Tuesday. The single accompanies the announcement of Hole Erth, his 8th studio album and the newest chapter in Toro y Moi’s vast genre shifting career.
Toro y Moi is the musical project of 37 year old Chaz Bear. He began his career in 2009 with the release of his debut EP Left Alone At Night. Originally hailed as a chill-wave pioneer, Bear saw himself in a different light and continued to innovate and pivot his sound. Toro y Moi has been Indie Rock, House, Psychedelia, Ambient, Hip Hop, Techno, and now Emo Pop Punk.
Chaz cites the punk and emo sounds of his childhood as influences to the new album’s sound, along with the production work he has done for some of the top hip hop acts of the last decade. Exemplified by anthemic choruses and crunchy rock guitar tones, that coat the new project, leading the way for Toro y Moi’s most exciting work yet.
Toro y Moi describes this release as “a suburban anthem” that explores the ever-blurring lines between the mainstream and underground. He is starting a conversation around how we understand the music we listen to. Asking questions about what the context of a release has to do with our enjoyment of it.
“Tuesday” is a digitized ear-worm. An absolute dive bomb into mid-week malaise and the desperate need for something new. The song is an anthem against the anti-unique blueprints of cul-de-sacs and top 40 spoon-fed celebrity break-up songs. If this single is any forecast of the album to follow, the cookie-cutter will be thrown out the window.
Toro y Moi has also announced his largest headlining tour to date. Venues include the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in LA, The Knockdown Center in New York, and the Greek Theatre in Berkeley.
