Across all of Holiday’s discography exists a central theme- finding comfort in accepting life’s darker moments. “Closer” remains no exception as the song is about Holiday’s lover growing closer to him despite all odds. Things that are meant to be realizing themselves into place no matter what.
Vlad Holiday’s music gained popularity by romanticizing the past, the human condition, and looking at relationships and love through a darker tinted lens. He has built a sonic world of his own through downtempo, soft sung tracks tinged with melancholy. Additionally, Holiday’s love for old microphones and other types of old recording equipment makes a big difference to his sound. “Closer” introduces the love interest portion of Holiday’s album. The song is a laid-back, groove forward, lo-fi track. It is a proclamation to Holiday’s love about how they make his world more beautiful now that they’re in it. All that came before was preparation to bring his lover closer to him.
“Closer” was co-written with Matt Schultz from Cage the Elephant and Jacob Bryant from The Brummies. You can hear Matt singing the “ah ah ah ah” hook as well as some parts in the outro. Vlad will be opening up Cage the Elephant’s tour, as well as for Young the Giant and Bakar this summer. He has been featured in NYLON, BrooklynVegan, The Deli Magazine, and more. He is definitely one to be watching as his music career progresses.
