Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Get It” by Cardinals!
Cardinals is a five-piece band from Cork, Ireland that incorporates influences of shoegaze, pop, and Irish trad folk into their gritty indie rock sound. “Get It” is the latest single from Cardinals, following the release of their 2024 self-titled debut EP. The EP got endorsements from other large Irish acts such as Fontaines D.C. and Kneecap! Cardinals are playing some shows and festival spots in the US in March in addition to various shows across the United Kingdom throughout the summer!
Sonically, the single differs from Cardinals’ other releases. Catchy drums, bright guitar parts, and melodic vocals help to drive the song in a more indie pop rock direction. Right before the bridge, there is an instrumental section that features an accordion—an essential part of Cardinals’ unique sound.
“Get It” is a reflective song looking back on both the best and worst parts of love. Utilizing a first-person conversation narrative with lyrics like “I know that you like the pain / But why? / You know it pulls us apart” paints a picture of the negative aspects that cause turmoil in their connection. The lyrics then build to “Never forget the power of the heart” encapsulating the overall message of the strength of the heart to withstand the fluctuating dynamics of a relationship.
