Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week is “What’s Left Of Me” by Neal Francis!
Inspired at an early age, singer-songwriter Neal Francis has always possessed an ear for the blues and soulful tones. Not only was he trained by both classical and modern piano maestros but he also became a member of the Reverend Funk Connection, his first band in high school. Francis also hung around Chicago venues and blues musicians in those days, growing his relationship to soul music. Eventually, he toured with other artists and bands, enduring the struggles of the road until his beginning as a solo artist.
In his newest track, Francis effortlessly blends the classic tape-driven sounds of the 60’s and 70’s with his own graceful and smooth melodies. This piece is packed with wide, soaring synthesizers and musical runs that punch! Exploding with warm, grooving pianos and firm percussive components, “What’s Left Of Me” is all things right. While much of the track is incredibly driven, the bridge leaves listeners in a dream-like state with gliding, airy vocals and rolling slide guitars. The lyricism provides an experience reminiscent of the joys and complications of traveling. Yet, this all comes at the cost of feeling separate from those we hold most dear.
This spring, Neal Francis is taking a pitstop in Nashville on his tour for the new album! Be sure to secure your tickets to see him perform at Brooklyn Bowl on April 5. Until then, check out the lo-fi music video for “What’s Left Of Me” below.
