This week, the interns have each chosen an African American artist to highlight as Black History Month draws to an end. Each artist is currently releasing music, and they are working to make their dreams come true.
Sally: XTC” by urika’s bedroom
urika’s bedroom is an L.A. based indie music project from Tchad Cousins. My intern pick is the second track off of urika’s bedroom’s debut album, Big Smile, Black Mire. The slow-burning bedroom pop jam “XTC” is the kind of song that washes over you. The folksy guitars provide a foundation for the many layers of sparkly pop production. The song’s title “XTC” is likely a reference to the 80s British new wave band of the same name, or simply a reference to a phonetic spelling of “ecstasy”. Either way, the name is fitting for the moody and unique sound of this track.

Chloe: “London Foxes” by Infinity Song
Infinity Song is a New York-based band comprised of four siblings, Abraham, Angel, Israel, and Momo Boyd. Their choir-inspired soft rock music uses smooth vocal harmonies and abstract lyricism to create dreamy soundscapes. Their sound is reminiscent of 70s soft rock like Fleetwood Mac. The four siblings grew up with parents who founded the Boys & Girls Choir of Detroit and have been performing in choirs since childhood. This is apparent in their live performances and music videos. Each member has a clear personality that stands out and makes the group all the more intriguing. Their newest single, “London Foxes”, was released last June. The track is an exciting detour from the band’s typical sound. “London Foxes” leans more towards 70s disco than rock. But it should be clear that Infinity Song doesn’t need to fall back on references; they are creating their own sound. The natural musical chemistry this group has from growing up creating music together shows in their artistry and performance.

Alex: “POMPEII STATUES” by Benjamin Booker
Benjamin Booker grew up in a trailer park outside of Tampa, where his neighbors once burned a cross on his front lawn. In 2014, Benjamin Booker graduated from college in Florida and then moved to New Orleans, where he created his first EP titled Waiting Ones, described as “lo-fi blues-influenced folk-punk recordings and handclap percussion.” In 2017, Benjamin Booker saw success with his album Witness, and before that, he opened for the likes of Tame Impala, Jack White, and Neil Young. It was after the 2017 album that he decided to take a hiatus from the music industry. Eight years later, he released his record Lower in January of 2025. The sound of the new record is experimental and psychedelic, and it was well-received by critics. It is truly like nothing I have ever heard, and attempts at explaining it would do it an injustice.

Abby: “Luv Sick Dreams” by Ayminor (Janay Slyvester)
Based in Connecticut, Ayminor is an indie-pop/R&B singer-songwriter. Her music is in modern styles, but she draws inspiration from the sounds of the early 2000s. Ayminor combines her heartfelt lyrics and soul to create a musical sound that connects to everyone. Her own unique storytelling and contemporary style blend together to create a lane all her own. Her newest release, “Luv Sick Dreams,” came out in late July. It combines Ayminor’s powerful storytelling with a rocking beat, harmonies, and classic R&B feel—an immediate addition to any R&B or chill playlist.
