Hey there Lightning 100 listeners and readers! Welcome to the most recent incarnation of “Intern Picks of the Week”. This semester Lightning 100 is sharing its office with three interns: Joe Bendekovic, Chloe Ketron, and Erin Renfro. Stick around after this week’s picks to get to know the interns!
Here is the inaugural Intern Picks of the Week:
Joe’s Pick
Adam Melchor – JEWEL
My Intern Pick of the Week is JEWEL by Adam Melchor. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter released his first single of the new year, and it’s safe to say Melchor is getting better with every release. His last two singles “Joyride” and “I CHOOSE YOU” showcased sonic experimentation all the while maintaining his organic songwriting. This new single is no different.
Chloe’s Pick
Me & You Together Song – The 1975
My Intern Pick of the Week could be none less than Me & You Together Song by The 1975. After releasing their latest albums full of electronic synth, this one sounds like a time even before their debut self-titled. The song plays with the idea of the nostalgia of being young and in love. Followed by a music video that puts us inside a British house party in the 90s, the teenage-dream concept is fully executed. The 1975 began playing together during their high school years, where they coined themselves — Drive Like I Do. “Me & You Together Song” isn’t the political statement we’re used to hearing from the band. Instead, it’s the soundtrack to their romanticized teenage years. It’s youthful. It’s fun. It’s Drive Like I Do.
This is the band’s third single from their upcoming album, Notes on a Conditional Form which is set to release in April.
Erin’s Pick
Pocket Change – Secondhand Sound
Nashville based band, Secondhand Sound, released Pocket Change in October of 2019. They’ve been featured on Lightning 100’s local show the615. The first single following the release of their EP, Words to Make You Stay. I listened to the song over and over trying to put my finger on what I was reminded of but could never land on any single artist or song. With their catchy and still unique sound, Secondhand Sound proves their potential to ride the new wave of rock music into the 2020s. Check them out on February 15th at The High Watt.
Joe Bendekovic
Joe the intern currently studies journalism at Belmont University and plays with Fulton Lee! His favorite song is “I Second That Emotion” by Smokey Robinson and his least favorite season of Dexter is season 7. Joe’s personality, beyond surface-level interests, will only be revealed through face-to-face conversations and dark humor.
Chloe Ketron
Chloe Ketron is a Junior at MTSU studying Media Management with minors in Film and Interactive Media. She’s exceptionally good at creating an excessive amount of Spotify playlists, attempting to survive on potatoes alone, and making life look pretty through the lens of a camera.
Erin Renfro
Erin Renfro is a senior Audio Engineering Technology student at Belmont University. When she’s not at school solving circuit problems or designing sound effects for a student film, Erin enjoys playing guitar, singing, and Deutsch Lernen.
