The real-life romantic duo, The Grahams, bring us this week’s DJ pick. The band consists of husband and wife duo Alyssa and Doug Graham. This Nashville based couple brings us a new taste of lusting for escapism in the title track off their third studio album, Kids Like Us. This 2020 release blends multiple genres of alt-pop, folk, and rock to create a unique record that gives the listener nostalgia like none other.
The Grahams released the music video for this single in mid- March amid the beginning of the pandemic panic. This music video is a kaleidoscope of teenage melancholy set in the backdrop of suburbia It also touches on the of the real-life struggles of growing up in a small town that is now plagued with opioid epidemics and climate change issues. “Kids Like Us” knocks down the wall between adolescence and adulthood.
This single is a perfect example of how childhood innocence gets corrupted by the hustle and bustle of real-world issues. Despite the tone being quite upbeat, this song touches on many subjects and obstacles the world faces. The Grahams have a talent for taking Neil Young, and Brian Wilson-esque easy-listening tunes and morphing them into their own modern alt-pop hits.
