Nashville transplant Hadley Kennary makes expansive, dance-party-in-your-bedroom pop. As one of our Local Artist of the Week alumni, she’s a Lightning 100 favorite. The Berklee College of Music graduate has independently released two EPs and a series of singles since arriving in Nashville, and 2021 will see her put out a new five-track project called Crooked Roots. “Orbit” is the first single off of it, and it’s Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week.

Written after running into an ex at a party, Kennary has been waiting to put this one out for a while. “I wrote ‘Orbit’ years ago about watching a relationship change, both over time and right in front of you. This song is the active decision to break a pattern and choose forward motion,” she explained in an Instagram post. As her first solo release of the year (she collaborated with Nashville’s Bre Kennedy on “The Hardest Part” in January), the song kicks off what promises to be an important era for the musician.

Kennary was raised on 2000s pop, and the influence is obvious on “Orbit.” Ten years ago she created an acoustic cover of Britney Spears’s “Oops!…. I Did it Again,” and the same artful melding of her singer-songwriter roots and her love of the highly produced pop style can be heard on “Orbit.” She blends genres, including Nashville’s famous country sound, in all of her music. On this latest single, the result is an infectious chorus that sees Kennary defiantly establish her independence.
