Pokey LaFarge brings us back in time with “Get It ‘Fore It’s Gone,” the first single from his upcoming album In The Blossom of Their Shade. Known best for his homage to the days of music’s past, LaFarge cites influences in his sound ranging from western swing to early jazz to ragtime blues. He’ll make you feel like you’re stepping into a different era — one of Jimmie Rodgers or Howlin’ Wolf. “Get It ‘Fore It’s Gone” is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week!
With breezy guitar and gentle rhythm, “Get It ‘Fore It’s Gone” feels like a lazy river or a day by the beach. That pace seems to stem from LaFarge’s new lifestyle during the pandemic. “This album is a result of my 2020 experience,” he told NPR. “I was in a dark place, but the pandemic actually created the much needed space for me to reflect. Turns out that being completely sedentary for once was a good thing. I found peace in the stillness. I was able to recalibrate what it is I do and why I’m doing it. Who I’m to do it with and most importantly, who I’m doing it for,” he told NPR.
The nautical-themed music video for the song matches its beachy feel. It has everything involved in a typical day by the sea: parrots, seagulls, and sunglasses-shaped tan lines. Check it out below!
