Indie rock band The Brook & The Bluff dropped “Doobie Bronson” earlier this month. Originally from Birmingham and now rocking in Nashville, the band released the song as a second single ahead of their new EP, Yard Sale (Side B), out September 17th. With psychedelic lyrics and a catchy melody, the song is a bittersweet exploration of the things that help us cope in life. “Doobie Bronson” is Dan’s DJ Pick of the week!
Beginning with bluesy piano and jumping straight into a heavy guitar riff, “Doobie Johnson” explores navigating the issues of life. The sound of the song is bright, packed with summery guitar riffs and lead singer Joseph Settine’s trademark vocals. On the other hand, the lyrics speak of frustration and conflict. The band sings of turning to different things to stay afloat — the title of the song being perhaps a suggestion of their preferred life jacket.

“Doobie Bronson” makes for a breezy, feel-good listen despite the conflicted lyrics. It starts off fairly standard for a rock song, but crescendos into a whirlwind of rowdy guitar and clashing drums. Members of the group say on their website that their sound is inspired by many of the greats: Settine draws from groups like The Beatles, while guitarist Alec Bolton builds off of a childhood of listening to Boston and Van Halen. Through this, it’s easy to see where the rock-heavy song draws its roots.
The music video for the song displays the lyrics in a groovy font that’s reminiscent of the ‘70s. Behind it, a clock ticks away as psychedelic flashes of color make the video align with the song’s hippier elements. Check it out below!
