This week’s DJ Pick of the Week comes from Middle kids and their new song “Highlands!”
Middle Kids is a renowned alternative rock band from New South Wales, Australia. The band consists of Hannah Joy on guitar/ piano/ vocals, Tim Fitz on bass, and Harry Day on drums. The band was formed in 2016 after Hannah Joy and Tim Fitz collaborated on each other’s musical projects. Thus far, the band has two singles, two studio albums, and fifteen singles. Middle Kids have numerous awards including the Australian album of the year in 2018. They are also the recipients of the 2021 Australian Album of the Year.
According to Hannah Joy, “Highlands” is a song that pays tribute to her Scottish heritage. In a recent Rolling Stones article, Hannah describes the song’s meaning: “Part of the imagery comes from my Scottish heritage, which my grandmother was always proud of. “I recorded some big slow piano chords which Tim (Fitz) mangled into the atmospheric hits in the intro.” For Joy, the highlands of Scotland are the one place where she can truly be herself.
