This week Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week is “High Life” from Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes. The indie rock trio formed in our very own backyard and has been traveling from city to city ever since. At Lightning 100’s first Music Mayhem in 2009, Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes got to battle many bands and placed 4th in the annual competition. When they’re not traveling, they’re writing songs, including tracks of their next album, High Life due February 16th, 2024. According to the band, this album is a “7 song journey about change, resistance, love, regret, and recognition of our shared humanity.” To grant a sneak peek into the album they released the electrifying title track which showcases the talent of Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes.
“High Life” was recorded in Los Angeles and mixed by producer Justin Glasco. This track is about letting someone go, then realizing they are who you want to be with. Daniel Ellsworth sings, “I’m fine, that wasn’t true” and “Imma bet it all on you.” The song features the perfect upbeat rhythm to dance to and is influenced by its electric pop counterparts. While listening, you can hear the synthesized instrumentation and the feel-good tone that makes it the perfect song to kick off your week.
