Rev’s DJ pick of the week is “For Cryin’ Out Loud” by FINNEAS.

Originally bursting into the mainstream as producer for his sister, Billie Eillish, Finneas O’Connell continues to expand his repertoire as a solo artist under the mononym FINNEAS. His new single, “For Cryin’ Out Loud”, marks his first solo release since October of 2022. FINNEAS also announced that this will be the first single of his second LP set to arrive October 4th. This is fresh off the release of the chart-topping Billie Eilish album, “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT”, which he produced in its entirety. A Billie and FINNEAS record all in one year? He always seems to have a hand in a few projects and while we are spoiled, we shouldn’t be surprised.

My favorite instrumental aspect has to be the organ sample that loops in and out of time with drums. His vocals come in smooth, forward, and staccato. He flawlessly shifts from chest voice to falsetto during the chorus’ pinnacle, “You’re running your mouth, but I’m singing your praises.”

The song presents FINNEAS as a somewhat pathetic, love-stricken man who is left to the subjection of an ill-meaning lover. He doesn’t sound very sure, however, with the opening line toiling, “Maybe it’s you, or maybe it’s me.” He alludes to a tendency that so many of us do in romantic relationships: blame ourselves. All this does is make us try harder to compensate. But when the problem isn’t you, there’s nothing you can do. Wow – artistic virtuoso or couples therapist? The struggle between self-awareness and emotional magnetism shines on this track and presents itself in a highly digestible form that warrants mainstream recognition.
