You know when you just get finished listening to a new song and think to yourself, “yeah, that’s exactly what I was needing.” Well that’s exactly what happened to me with Kim Deal’s latest release Crystal Breath.
You may be familiar with Kim Deal as the bassist for the Pixies or perhaps from her success with The Breeders. Yet Deal has decided to hook audiences with purely her genius in this new single. Deal continues to excite listeners throughout both her groups and solo career. Her latest is nothing less than astonishing. With a plethora of experience and collaborations under her belt, Deal seems to somewhat effortlessly captivate all those that listen.
When listening to this song I instantly thought of it being in the background of someone achieving something big. Or, for example, the training scene in Rocky could be backed by this track in another timeline. So, if you are looking for a new song to add to a gym cardio playlist, you’ve found it!
The curated lyrics portray how to follow the music through life’s journey. With the chorus amplifying “beat’s gonna lead us – beat on”. It’s challenging to feel anything but serene and empowered after listening. In the introduction, Deal pumps bass, coupled with harmonic singing, into your ears and buckles you up for an exciting listen. She then leads into a somewhat crunchy alternative trance state. It’s a very euphoric and edgy groove. I’m not going to spoil all the fun, but this song definitely keeps you on your toes. It keeps you yearning to discover what comes next. “Crystal Breath” fully captures your undivided attention for a full three minutes and 28 seconds, which in today’s world is saying a lot. It’s rare that a song keeps you fully enthralled for its entirety- especially one that you’re haven’t been listening to for 30+ years.
I am excited to hear what Deal comes up with next! Listen to “Crystal Breath” here:
