L.A. singer/songwriter Chance Peña might be a familiar name around here, but as long as the hits keep coming, Peña isn’t going anywhere. “Whiskey Angel” is this week’s ONErpm Hitmaker featured track.
From collaborations with John Legend and David Guetta to feature songs in Netflix shows and sold out performances, Peña’s small town origins are a dream away. His first step came when he turned all four chairs on The Voice. His next came when he contributed to a Grammy winning record. But despite how far removed he may be from his roots, his upbringing remains present in his music. “Whiskey Angel” features the kind of barnyard stomp and soul that makes Tyler, Texas seem not so far away. As the instrumentation grows and the choir reveals itself towards the end, the fireside glow is almost palpable. Peña, though young, sings with the comforting voice of a grizzled songwriter. His ability to craft such compelling images with his music at just 24 is more than impressive.
“Whiskey Angel” is a cornerstone track off Ever-Shifting, Continual Blossoming, his first full-length LP. Self-producing the bulk of his music, Chance Peña continues to act as a sort of one-man show. He will be at Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival this weekend in Franklin, where he will perform Saturday alongside the likes of Hozier and Dave Matthews. Chance has been on the road with Kaleo, playing for his biggest crowds to date. A headlining tour in Europe this October marks another first for this young rising star. Chance will be one to watch as he continues to defy odds and prove his status within the greater folk and Americana music scene.
