This week’s ONErpm Hitmaker is David Shaw with brand new single “When You Love Somebody”. Shaw is no stranger to Lightning, having been featured as the Hitmaker with single “Take a Look Inside” in August. His primary project, The Revivalists, has been well known as a musical force to be reckoned with, their reputation featuring four-hour shows, extensive charity work, number one singles, and signature beer lines. However, Shaw’s solo output does not slow them down. The Revivalists’ Pour It Out into the Night was released in June of 2023. A true musical workhorse, “When You Love Somebody” is a gem within Shaw’s second solo LP.
While the track wouldn’t sound out of place on a Revivalists record, “When You Love Somebody” is a chance for Shaw to more personally deliver some nuggets of wisdom. The track features lyrical themes of regret and desperation through the lens of a long drive. On the song’s message, Shaw said, “Love is tough, man. It can make you feel so good like you’re on top of the world, or you’re down at the bottom of the well.” Spotlighting the vocal performance, he sings earnestly. He wields the grizzled voice of a frontman now in the second act of his musical career. The driving, contemplative groove is both danceable and meditative. The sticky hook is sure to remain constant in the heads of listeners, a testament to Shaw’s songwriting ability.
David Shaw performs at The Basement East on November 6th. If his ACL performance is any indication, the tour will bring a storm of energy and vibes to Nashville. Pour It Out into the Night is available everywhere as of this October, a set of songs self-described as a product of “that river of creativity and pure consciousness that flows through us all.” Meanwhile, The Revivalists have a few upcoming shows and some solid new tracks as well.
