Lightning 100 is excited to announce Hogslop String Band Feat. Margo Price as our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week with their cover of Dr.Kook’s “The Cover of Rolling Stone”!

Hogslop String Band is a local group formed in 2009 who is fighting to change the string band status quo. This group holds onto the bluegrass tradition but takes a spin by adding in other genres such as punk, rock, folk, and even psychedelic. They released their long awaited, self-titled album in 2019 which showcased their original take on string music. This new cover also features Margo Price, a Nashville based country singer-songwriter who got her start with her debut album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter back in 2016. She gained a lot of traction through her album All American Made which made her a GRAMMY nominee for Best New Artist in the 61st annual GRAMMY awards in 2019.

Hogslop String Band’s cover of “The Cover of Rolling Stone” holds on to the perfect amount of Dr. Kook’s 1972 release. The track begins with Margo’s captivating voice later joined by Hogslop’s lead singer, Kevin Martin. Listeners of both songs will immediately hear the cover’s addition of more complex string and guitar pieces in comparison to the original’s focus on the bass line. The track however holds onto the layered BGV’s that helped to give the original track it’s charm in the 70’s. Margo’s voice adds a new element to the song, incorporating a higher melody and harmony into the vocals. Additionally, Hogslop’s genre additions do not go unnoticed, creating a fuller sound throughout the track.
