This week’s Community Corner spotlight features The Cookery!
Brother Love got to speak with Brett Swayn, the executive chef and founder of The Cookery. Swayn, originally from Australia, moved to the U.S. and in 2002, experienced a religious conversion. Shortly after, he moved to Nashville where he experienced homelessness, which sparked his passion for reform within the community. He felt compassion for those in need around him due to his experience with these difficulties himself. After being offered positions in the culinary world, he decided to give back to the homeless population in Nashville. Today, he still serves at The Cookery, aiding others in finding value in their lives through cooking.
The Cookery, located on 12th Avenue South, is an Australian inspired cafe with a bigger purpose than creating a good meal. Their focus is to build confidence in men who have experienced homelessness, through culinary work. They have created a program where these men become students who are trained in culinary techniques and food safety and are given a safe place to live while studying.Their goal is to bring light back into the lives of those who step into their program and develop the skills they will need to begin their own journey in the food industry. In addition to these courses, The Cookery also offers bible studies, mentorship programs, worship nights, food drives, and so much more. The Cookery is a place of hope that is dedicated to giving back to each and every individual who walks through the doors.
