Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week is “All I Ever Am” by The Cure!

The Cure, one of England’s most influential rock band’s, recently released their album Songs Of A Lost World. This new album is moody, emotional, and volatile. It feels personal and saturated in deep thought. Songs Of A Lost World gives a glimpse into the fear and angst that comes with aging. The feelings of losing touch with time and regretting what you didn’t take advantage of when you had the chance. This new album lives up to the standards of The Cure’s past releases, and it is easy to see the passion to create meaningful art is still just as present as it was in the 70s when they first began releasing music.

“All I Ever Am” is a song about the way standards affect our self worth. It explains the struggle with idea of never being enough and overthinking every choice you have made. “The way love turns out every time / Will never be enough” Lead singer, Robert Smith, wrestles with the fear of never feeling adequate and the belief that things will not change. Later, Smith explains that he cannot quit overthinking “All for fear of what [he’ll] find if [he] just stops” Overall this song is introspective and passionate. It covers the comfort we find in overthinking and the fear of silence that pairs with the acclimation to our thoughts. Through the lyrics, Smith allows us to see into his darker psyche, witnessing firsthand his struggle with worth and identity and his settlement for what he feels he deserves.
