This week on Community Corner, Brother Love sits down with Meaghan Thiede and Candy Listz from Laws Saving Paws.

Laws Saving Paws is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to advocate for better treatment of animals in Nashville. The organization’s president, Meaghan, explains that Nashville has a severe problem with animal overpopulation. Almost all shelters are over-capacity and almost 100 dogs are put down every month. While both Meaghan and Candy are involved in animal rescue, they emphasize that LSP is focused on social change and preventative work through education and reform.

Laws Saving Paws wants to draw attention to the lack of breeding laws in Nashville, to educate the community, and how to sustain responsible breeding. For example, puppy mills and backyard breeding are huge contributors to pet overpopulation and, because Nashville has no laws regulating animal population, more pets are being produced than the community has a need for. Meaghan also explains how to breed responsibly by keeping animals in safe conditions.

Meaghan and Candy also share how you can get involved! Laws Saving Paws is currently running a campaign to urge Tractor Supply, a local agriculture supply store, to stop allowing irresponsible breeders to post fliers on their bulletin boards. Additionally, Laws Saving Paws hosts The Bark Podcast where you can learn more about their active campaigns and how to get involved in community efforts.

Instead of directly rescuing animals, LSP focuses on sustainable change through educational and legislative work. “Rescue is reactionary” say Meaghan and Candy, that’s why Laws Savings Paws is response-driven. It is a strategic avenue to create long-term change by encouraging people to invest in the situation, even when there won’t be immediate results.
