August Spotlight – Samantha Crain

This month, Blind Tiger spotlights Samantha Crain‘s sixth studio album, A Small Death. Crain has become a familiar name in the americana and folk realm by touring with some of our favorites the past decade. As Williams and Newman listed some of these acts, it sounded like they were doing a roll-call of our rotation: The Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim, Brandi Carlile… yep, they’re all here!

After describing her background, they dig into the album. A Small Death has a beautiful darkness to it, and the duo explains where this haunting sound comes from. The album concept was born from tragedy involving 3 separate car accidents in a brief period of time. Despite this setback, the album’s lyrical content remains hopeful. This outlook is so important right now, and that’s what makes A Small Death worthy of this month’s spotlight! The next vinyl to hit the Blind Tiger webstore is Lianne La Havas‘ self-titled & self-produced album. This UK artist hit the ground running in 2012 with massive critical acclaim on her debut album. After Grammy & Brit nominations, world tours, and another album- her momentum is far from slowing down.

If the featured single, “Can’t Fight” sounds familiar, that’s because you’ve heard it right here on Lightning 100! This song brightens our airwaves and we agree with BTRC that it’s a contender for the year-end charts! Grab it before it’s gone, this record is too hot to keep on the shelves!

“This Town is a Woman” starts off the next segment and it’s comforting to welcome a prominent Nashville voice to the air. Lori McKenna‘s songwriting is featured in a variety of large pop and country albums which earned her countless nominations and awards. This month she brings the magical story of The Balladeer to her own name, which is the album that BTRC & Steve Horowitz thinks will, “cement her reputation as one of America’s finest musical artists.” The Balladeer is produced by another notable Nashvillian, Dave Cobb, and is predicted to claim Grammy nominations in 2021. This vinyl is another record that is almost out of print, so secure your copy ASAP!

It’s about time for some new Alanis Morissette! Named one of the most iconic women in music by Blind Tiger, Such Pretty Forks in the Road has been on their radar since its announcement. This album is everything fans expect from Morissette with an impactful performance driven by honest lyricism. This is an album for the fans who’ve been following her career since the nineties. There isn’t a lot of Alanis Morissette on vinyl, so this record is a unique addition to have in your collection.

Another 90’s throwback brings us to Make Yourself by Incubus. BTRC goes into a brief history of this 1999 album and how it grew to sell 2 million albums. They start off talking about their discovery, Incubus’ ties to Korn, and more! Make Yourself is now available on a limited edition purple-velvet 2XLP. This luxurious pressing is a work of art!

Compared to Fleetwood Mac, this album brings a fresh take to 70’s nostalgia and is a must-have on vinyl. Buy it from Blind Tiger and you’ll get a complimentary 7″!
