Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “The Break” by Blame My Youth!
Los Angeles-based alt-rock band Blame My Youth is back with another single. Fronted by Sean Van Vleet, Blame My Youth boldly mixes tender lyrics and strong instrumentation.
Blame My Youth’s first single “Right Where You Belong” landed a spot in the closing credits of Bill & Ted Face the Music, helping establish the band in the rock scene. Blame My Youth cultivated a live following by playing at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza and touring with acclaimed bands Death Cab for Cutie, Alkaline Trio and Deerhunter.
The band has started releasing new material after the 2022 release of their debut EP Dance With My Demons. “The Break,” produced and co-written with Joey Moi, is fresh and upbeat with a vulnerable edge.
Van Vleet’s powerful, raspy vocals cut through with immediacy. The track’s rhythmic electric guitar and bubbly synths create an energetic feel that continues through its entirety.
Van Fleet passionately sings about acknowledging heartbreak and moving forward. The track’s upbeat instrumentation interestingly contrasts with Van Vleet’s lyrical vulnerability. In the choruses, Van Vleet sings “In between these sheets, this heart’s just waiting for the break” overtop a cascade of shimmery pop-rock.
“The Break” offers both sonic earworms and visceral meaning to its listeners. It’s a track you won’t want to miss out on.
