“The Getaway” by The Afghan Whigs is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week. The Afghan Whigs are a rock band out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The group was established in 1986 and rose in popularity throughout the 90s. Despite the original band’s breakup in 2001, lead songwriter Greg Dulli and the core members reconnected in 2012. The reformed band continues to have the Whig’s classically soulful, rapturous sound.
“The Getaway” is the second released single for the upcoming album, How Do You Burn? Intricately layered vocals are paired with building guitar and drum sequences to create a somber, nuanced rock song.
“How do you Burn?” is set to be released on September 9, 2022, and is The Afghan Whigs’ first studio album in 5 years. Work for the album started in September of 2020. Amidst the pandemic, the band was remote for much of the album’s audio recording and production. However, the band is finally able to come together for their recently announced US/Europe tour. The 2022 Wish You Were Near tour will go from September 9th to November 6th. Tickets are available here.
