Intern Picks Graphic

First off, we want to say that we hope everyone has been able to stay safe and warm throughout this freeze-over. Hopefully you’re all getting your power back and not suffering too terribly from cabin fever. If you’re anything like us, you’ve been using this opportunity to listen to some music! A snow day can be a great time to refresh your playlists and discover new tunes. Here’s the songs us interns have been listening to that’ve helped get us through this lock-in!

Chloe’s Pick: “Snow Day” – Tacocat

I think a lot of us have gotten quite a few more snow days than we initially expected! However, this is a great time to reset and take a break from our busy schedules. That is exactly what Tacocat is expressing in their track “Snow Day.” Even though a snow-in can make you feel trapped, Tacocat reminds us that there can still be joy and whimsy in a time of uncertainty. With lyrics like, “Jobs are stupid so we quit, Cars are stuck we let them sit, And there’s nothing wrong with it,” this upbeat bubble punk track takes a silly approach to this perpetual boredom we’ve all been stuck in!

Alex’s Pick: “Rina” – Mad Anthony

The nearly week-long hiatus from work, school, and routine has prompted some self-reflection. I’ve been living in a friend’s apartment with a lot of downtime to read, think, and strum my guitar. The song that most embodies this saga for me has been ‘Rina’ by Mad Anthony. If you haven’t heard this song, that’s alright- it’s from a band in the ‘70s that never broke through, only recently having their hauntingly beautiful demos released in 2023. It’s music lost to time, and this week for me has felt the same.

Abby’s Pick: Snow Angel – Reneé Rapp

After many days and sleepless nights during this week, I had a lot of time to ponder on music, new and old. An album from 2023 came up in my shuffle, prompting my pick of the week. “Snow Angel” is the title track of Reneé Rapp’s debut album, although she is known for many Broadway songs (where are my Mean Girls fans!) throughout the years. The repetition of the line, “I’ll make it through the winter if it kills me,” echoed through my mind this week as I kept in contact with my family to update them on my well-being. The song blends piano balladry with light vocals and harmonies and strong electric guitar with belting emotions, matching Winter Storm Fern’s force and beauty. We will make it through the winter, one step at a time.

Sally’s Pick: “Break The Ice” – Babehoven

For this week’s intern pick I chose the song Break The Ice by Babehoven to commemorate this week’s winter storm. Babehoven is an indie rock duo made up of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert, based in Hudson NY. Babehoven’s music is acoustic guitar driven, with distinct and original vocal melodies. They blend folk music with psychedelic aesthetics and production. This unique blend was the perfect soundtrack for the strange weather that sent Nashville into a tizzy this week. This was my first real Nashville ice storm and there’s truly nothing like it; exploding trees, powerlines drooping under the weight of pristine icicles, and a landscape that looks like it’s been fully encased in glass. So if you’re looking for music to listen to as you take the snow shovel to your back porch, this is the perfect song for the occasion. Listen to Break The Ice by Babehoven at the link below!
