Our Frothy Monkey‘s local artist of the week is Lilly Hiatt with single “Shouldn’t Be”!
Few artists have been able to harness the culture and power of Nashville quite like Lilly Hiatt. A tried and true folkstar, Hiatt has been building her identity at a storyteller since her youth. Weaving tales and scenes from Tennessee life into song, her efforts in preserving the brightest parts of the culture have expanded beyond the music itself. Integrating analog recording techniques and releasing music on traditional, non-digital formats have been part of the M.O. of this musical preservationist. These efforts have opened her up to collaborations from legendary producers as well as recognition from Third Man Records. Her holding sacred time and its vitality informed latest single, “Shouldn’t Be.”
For an artist so well-traveled, well-acquainted, and well-read, Hiatt’s frustration with the passage of time only makes sense. This Lilly is helpless towards her past and future self’s decisions, simply caught in the tide of the current moment. Her musical and artistic presence is rare in the modern day. She is equally informed by Nashville past and integral to its future. The song’s music video, featuring actresses playing her throughout time, reflects this complicated relationship with herself. Sonically, the track features Hiatt’s signature blend of roots rock with an Americana flair. A blistering guitar solo is the firework finish to this rolling rocker.
It’s difficult to miss Hiatt these days. An integral part of Nashville’s local scene, she has become a vocal proponent and supporter of the culture. A few of the upcoming events she will be involved in include The Last Waltz tribute, the 30A Songwriters festival, and a brand new record Forever at the end of January. She announced her next single, “Thoughts,” this morning, and it will arrive soon as part of the campaign. The album will detail Hiatt’s experience with change and introspection.
