Lightning 100 announces Creature Comfort as our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week! Although the track was released on Valentine’s Day of this year, this cover of George Harrison’s “If Not For You” is a beautiful serenade for all year round.
George Harrison’s rendition of the track has a lot of meaning to the Nashville-based band, as it was the recessional in the lead singer’s wedding last April. As a wedding gift, the band recorded many of the couple’s favorite songs, including “If Not For You,” and surprised the bride with them the morning after. Luckily, just under a year later, they released their heartwarming cover to the world.
The band’s self-described genre of “Indie Bootgaze” perfectly encapsulates this track. Whereas there are similarities to George Harrison’s version- and even Bob Dylan’s- the original folk feel has been completely transformed into an indie/country paradise for the ears. The song has a very upbeat and playful feel, which pairs perfectly with sincere, yet lighthearted lyrics like If not for you/Babe, I couldn’t even find the door. The twangy instrumentation under expressive indie vocals makes for an endearing, genre-bending delight. This cover is a lovely and comforting listen, and the affectionate message behind its creation makes it even more meaningful.
