This week each of our interns had a song stuck in their head that they just couldn’t shake, so we thought we’d share those picks for this week’s article.
Leo’s Pick: nsfw by Cosette
As the hyper-pop genre continues to expand and find its footing in the musical zeitgeist, one artist stands out in defining what the genre means. Cosette uses hyperpop aesthetics to convey heartbreak, introspection, and a soft spoken demeanor. While hyperpop began as a messy, comical, rage-filled genre circa 2020, it’s taken a sudden shift in tonality due to artists like her. In the beginning, artists like 100 gecs originated the genre without clear direction, but with unabashed artistic fervor. Now, the direction of the genre has become increasingly clear due to artists like Cosette. In her new track, “nsfw,” Cosette sings about a long distance relationship and the hardship that comes along with it. She writes, “Terminal 5 at LAX is my best friend. She hears me cry, but only for a sec.” Here, she ruminates on these thoughts over lush synth chords, subtle arpeggios, a dance beat, and heavily processed vocals. It’s clear that hyper-pop is not a passing musical phase, and Cosette is an artist that is here to stay. Personally, this is a track I can’t seem to turn off, and makes me excited for what is to come for the future of hyperpop.
Michelle’s Pick: Out of It by The Story So Far
The song that I can’t take off of repeat right now is “Out of It” by The Story So Far off their album Proper Dose. This song is the perfect embodiment of the Pop Punk genre with its catchy guitar riffs and emotionally charged lyrics. The chorus always hits and I have definitely been singing it at the top of my lungs in the car. “My appropriate opiate has me out of it / Out of it / I can’t believe you’re still upset / Get over it / And leave me alone.” Up until last year Proper Dose was their latest album since 2018 and it was a go to for me back in high school. Now, as I wrap up my final semester of college, “Out of It” feels both nostalgic and pretty fitting. I’m definitely feeling “over it” in more ways than one. If you’re in a spot in your life where you feel the need to get some frustration out, I definitely recommend you check this song out!
Grace’s Pick: Perfume by Sombr
I was listening to a lot of Sombr in the past week in preparation for his concert last Wednesday. Out of his discography, “Perfume” is the one I played the most. He is taking the world by storm with overnight fame from songs going viral on TikTok this summer. Currently holding the 29th most popular artist spot on Spotify, Sombr is a 20 year old singer-songwriter and all of his music hits close to home if you’re going through a breakup. This song has been my favorite because he talks about the hopes of waiting for your love to return and keeping things of theirs in case they do. One line in the song really sticks out to me… “I know no amount of drugs and unfulfilling love could make things feel the same.” Gut wrenching to say the least. This song is so catchy and danceable but the lyrics hold so much meaning and really hit home. It makes it so I am able to dance around and scream my lungs out with pure emotion at the same time. Go Listen!
Zerita’s Pick: Run Around by Blues Traveler
This prompt came at the most opportune time for me, as I stepped into the station this morning humming my obsession of the past 24 hours- Blues Traveler’s “Run Around.” Having listened to the tune 7 times (though by the time this article is posted it will most likely be double that) I still can’t find a reason to stop listening. Blues Traveler obviously has a knack for writing a good hook, hence the satirical hit off the same album, “Hook” that brought them to the top of the charts in 1994. With catchy songs, tight grooves, and a knack for bringing harmonica into the mainstream, Blues Traveler is one band from the 90s that remains timeless.
As they prepare for a show at The Ryman later this month, their vast catalog full of fun jams has me debating buying a ticket.
