When Phillip Michael Scales wants you to feel something, you FEEL it. On his latest track “Find A Way” a tight high-hat pattern reminiscent of Anderson .Paak accentuates melodies that remind me of another local favorite, Devon Gilfillian. It’s a fresh blend of indie rock and soul that even hints at the blues, a genre that Scales intentionally shied away from early in his career (more on that later).
Scales has kept busy in quarantine – recording vocals remotely, participating in Lightning 100’s broadcast of People Supporting Music for Musicares, and submitting his entry to NPR’s Tiny Desk competition. Check it out below:
Now that you know Scales is a formidable artist in his own right, you may be intrigued to learn that he is the nephew of blues icon BB King. Yeah, that BB. King. If you needed further evidence that talent runs in the family, now you have it.
Tune in all week long to hear Phillip Michael Scales featured as our Local Artist of the Week at 100.1FM or streaming live at lightning100.com.
