Adrianne Lenker "Sadness As A Gift" - Steph's DJ Pick of the Week

Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Sadness As A Gift” from Big Thief’s own Adrianne Lenker!

The single released alongside the announcement of her newest solo album, Bright Future. It’s a perfectly eclectic track- something Lenker perfected on her first album songs & instrumentals, released in 2020. This newest era is the perfect continuation of the last. Although four years since her last full-length solo work, this track proves good things take time.

“Sadness As A Gift” is a timeless piece of music. The track consists of Lenker’s warm voice as well as intricate guitar, piano, and violin floating through the background. The lyrics are vulnerable and gut wrenching- “The seasons go so fast // Thinking this one was going to last // Maybe the question was too much to ask.” Fans of Big Thief and Adrianne’s solo projects alike are bound to resonate with “Sadness As A Gift.”

The entire album, including this track, was co-produced by Philip Weinrobe. His ability to capture the purest and most raw vocals absolutely shines on this song. This, plus the work of talented musicians Mat Davidson, Nick Hakim, and Josefin Runsteen, creates the perfect sonic experience for listeners.

Bright Future is a twelve-track album, featuring “Sadness As A Gift” and previously released single “Ruined.” As the album releases on March 22, it’s highly likely we’ll get another track to enjoy before its full release. With North American tour dates announced for the summer, Lenker is sure to have another great year in music.
