Bachelor is Melina Duterte of Jay Som and Ellen Kemper of Palehound. After years of friendship and admiration for each other’s work, the duo finally paired up in January of 2020— just in time to make an album before the pandemic hit. Now, a little over a year later, their debut Doomin’ Sun has been announced along with a new single. “Stay in the Car” is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week!
“Stay in the Car,” along with the rest of the album, was written and recorded over the course of two weeks from a rental house in Topanga, California. Here, the heavy themes of queerness and climate change emerged, and the pain borne of them was channeled into new music. Nonetheless, the band remembers this time spent creating together as one of pure joy. Alongside the duo, the record will feature contributions from Big Thief’s Buck Meek and James Krivchenia, as well as Chastity Belt’s Annie Truscott (who share’s another band with Jay Som called Routine).
Of “Stay in the Car,” Duterte told NME, “We wanted this song to be a visceral listening experience, inspired by The Pixies and The Breeders. For the music video, we worked on a two-day shoot with Haoyan of America in Poughkeepsie in extremely cold weather. We all collaborated on the idea that our friendship should be portrayed in a fun and stylish way.” Fun and stylish it is— the video features road trip chaos set in a red Honda Element stuffed to the brim with colorful vintage knick-knacks and gadgets. It’s the same fried, maximalist aesthetic seen on Doomin’ Sun’s album art. When combined with the garagey grit of their latest single, Bachelor promises to deliver exactly what they set out to give.
